![]() Unstated Statements 05 KIOSK KIOSK is a mobile stand/display which isn't a one-way communicator bringing a political, social, or brand-related message. On the contrary, this KIOSK is developed to present products from the Unstated Statements 04 series (a bag on a bag on a bag on) which refer to only themselves. Therefore this KIOSK sells/communicates no emotional message or experience. It's form is based on a laundry rack (on which clothes lose there value) and is made out of materials known from displays and stands like fake marble, metal, wood and textile. Photography: Jitske Hagens KIOSK is produced by: Facemakers Not without: Dorien Dolsma, Tycho Simmers, Henk Balkema, Klaas Reitsma Images |
![]() Unstated Statements 04 (a bag on a bag on a bag on) By placing an 'image' of the object on the object itself, these basic asseccoires (basic- well known forms, easy colour tones and materials) refer to nothing besides themselves. Therefore they don't communicate/sell a brand, emotion or other constructed experiences like so many fashion-related products do. Products: Basic cotton bag with bag - print, cotton bag with small cotton bag as front pocket and a bag excisting out of a piece of cloth with a small bag as front pocket. Woven light scarf with scarf embroidered upon (in several tones), hand crochet scarf in beige/grey or blue/grey. A gold pendant with 'Gold' engraved and a silver pendant with 'Silver' engraved. ![]() Everlasting Temporary Constructions 01 Temporary sculptures captured to become everlasting. A series of bags based upon random, disposable 'bag-sculptures' that found their form by getting in touch with several elements like for example the wind, or a kick by a foot. This process is in great contrast with a design process where the designer is in control and leaves his or her signature. By stransforming these temporary sculptures into usable, durable bags, the designer is out of the picture. And in the eye of the fast pace of fashion this temporary form has become everlasting. The first collection exists out of 4 models. (material: various white nylons) Images |
![]() Unstated Statements 03 Copy Waste, by default one of a kind. A book in development. Herewith showing a selection of items belonging to a growing series collected since 2009 in various places. 'Copying is the duplication of information or an artefact based only on an instance of that information or artefact, and not using the process that originally generated it. With analog forms of information, copying is only possible to a limited degree of accuracy, which depends on the quality of the equipment used or the skill of the operator. There is some inevitable deterioration and accumulation of "noise" (random small changes, not sound) from original to copy; when successive generations of copy are made this deterioration accumulates with each generation. With digital forms of information copying is perfect.' Copy Waste is a story about the inevitable deterioration and accumulation of "noise" from original to copy. Some of the noise more dominant than others and depending on the equipment as well as operator. But most of all Copy Waste is a story about expectations that come with the process of copying visualised in a collection of copies that turned out not to be the copy expected. Images |

![]() Unstated Statements 01 The t-shirt, commonly known as the fashion platform for statements. " I came across this installation by Femke de Vries today. It's called Unstated Statements 01 - it's about lack, a loss, nonexistence. Where text is normally located on a teeshirt is simply a void. Silence can speak volumes - think of a comfortable silence between those so intimate, the space between notes, blank space on a page. I like not knowing - it's usually far more interesting than what really lies within and beneath" Text by Natalie Emma Smith Images |

![]() Index, A statement about content: A Bag Collection A bag collection in which anonymous disposable bags are made out of a durable material, leather. The fact that the looks of disposable bags are universal, familiar, anonymous and have no brand values or illusions attached to them, offers an open ' experience space' for the user. By making these bags out of a durable material the user is invited to add personal values. 'A bag collection' is part of: 'Index, a statement about content. In 1908 the German architect Adolf Loos presented his essay entitled 'Ornament is crime' in which he pleaded for a style with lack of ornament. His essay was a statement against the, in that time, leading Art Nouveau movement. A style that was known for its overdose on decoration. Again we are surrounded by ornaments, but today not only the products themselves are over designed but also the 'experience space' that comes with a product. Marketing and advertisement filled this space with constructed emotions and illusions, in other words ' today's ornament'.These constructed emotions and illusions attached to products influence our relation with a product even more than the superficial Art Nouveau ornaments. They guide us in the emotions we attach to products and in that way make sure we all experience a product the same way. The overdose of ' today's ornament' drastically minimized the room for personal values and we are noticing the first counter reactions. Not only the longing for simplified / minimalistic product design is growing but also the longing for products without constructed emotions and illusions. Index, a statement about content is an analytical product approach with the goal to create awareness about effect of today's ornament. The goal of ' Index a statement about content' is to undress the product of its unnecessary ornament, everything that goes beyond the 'functional aspect'. A product should be a non-guiding, subtle frame whereas everyone can decide which values he wants to fill it in with. To bring products back tot their essence and find space for personal values ' Index, a statement about content' uses a number of design principles which seem to be very relevant in today's society. The design principles are: - to stress the construction, essence of a product. - make sure the product does not refer to anything beside itself. - to show a product without it's context. To show the relevance, the design principles are used in various products like; a bag collection, a catalogue and a print. Images |
